Pavilions in the Deep Mountains by Chiu Ying, Ming dynasty.

There are two paintings with this composition.  The other scroll is entitled "Mansion of the Immortals among Clouds and Streams."  Except for fewer complexities in the cloud-laden mountains, the rest of the composition is about the same.  Chiu Ying did not date most of his paintings, but by using the date of Lu Shih-tao's "Ode on the Mountains of the Immortals," we know this is later by two years.  The brushwork of this painting is more refined.  The detail on the pavilion is as fine as a strand of hair, though the painting was executed on unsized paper: such skill was beyond the power of others.  The scroll is signed: "Painted by Chiu Ying Shih-fu," and above the painting is the "Ode on the Mountains of the Immortals" by Lu Shih-tao written in standard script.

Chiu Ying (born ca. 1494 - died ca. 1552) was a native of Tai-tsang, Kiangsu.  His style name was Shih-fu, his sobriquet was shih-chou.  Chiu Ying's first ambition was to paint.  Chou Chen noticed his talent and taught him.  In time Chiu Ying became famous.  He at first copied famous styles of the Sung and Yuan periods and often captured their essence.  He initially studied the landscape painting of Chou Chen and Tang Yin but in compositional order transcended them.  Chiu Ying's style is similar to that of Liu Sung-nien, and he excelled in painting lovely ladies as well as architectural painting.  In his painting he possessed the refined abilities of a court academician but was endowed with taste of the literati.  He was capable of wielding a bold brush to paint large figure and landscape scrolls in a highly rhythmic style.  He ranks among the Four Masters of the Ming.  His birth and death dates are unclear.  It is possible that he was born in 1494 and died in 1552 at the age of 59.
