Autumn Colors on Myriad Mountains by Tang Yin, Ming dynasty. Amidst a towering cliff and a water-side pavilion are seen figures engaged in everyday affairs and scrolling white clouds that spread throughout the landscape. The scene elicits a feeling of countless mountains and trees, all densely packed together. In the small space of the fan the traces of the brush tightly assemble, not a single loose brushstroke to be found. This is a work of early maturity, revealing the utmost of skill and refinement. The artist titled and signed this fan in seal script: "'Autumn Colors on Myriad Mountains,' painted by Tang Yin of Wu-chun." A single seal follows: Tang po-hu. Signatures in the small seal script are not often seen in Tang Yin's paintings. Tang Yin studied the painting style of Chou Chen after the age of thirty, and this painting demonstrates the degree to which he captured Chou Chen's essence. Nevertheless, it does not avoid being wrought. The fan may well have been painted around the age of thirty-four. This fan is the fifth of the album "Ming Wen Cheng-ming Shen Chou Tang Yin Chiu Ying pien-mien ho-chuang tse." |
