Sung Dynasty
Sung
Dynasty – (960 – 1279A.D)
The sung time is often called a “Chinese Renaissance” The amount of great
Chinese landscape artist is too numerous to count.
Northern Sung Period (960 – 1126)
Painters often favored a monumental style, creating awesome vistas, such
as artists Li Cheng and Fan Kuan with paintings of massive rocky cliffs
punctuated by an occasional waterfall or a group of small figures. The
brushwork in these paintings is often complex, with stokes repeated on
over the other to create the illusion of texture.
Southern Sung Period (1127 – 1279)
The two greatest artists in Southern Sung Dynasty are Ma Yuan and Hsia
Kuei. They created views with less brushwork. Ma Yuan was often called
“one-corner Ma”, as he would restrict much of his painting to a single
corner of the work leaving the rest blank. The technique enhanced the
sensation of open space and suggested infinity, qualities much prized in
the Ma-Hsia tradition.
Su Han-chen is known one of the excellent artists on painting children and
Emperor Hui-Zong is famous in depicting Cranes.
