Herd of Deer in a Maple Grove. Anonymous. Five dynasties. A herd of deer graze and rest in an autumnal forest. The touch of the artist's brush is pliant and well-rounded, with a special method used in coloring the trees: the outlined leaves are filled in either moist green or with a powder which is then colored red and green. The result is a brilliant floating quality which is especially luxuriant in effect. The composition fills the entire painting surface and suggests foreign influence. This scroll and "Deer in an Autumn Forest" are identical in subject matter, painting methods and measurements: they are probably by the same hand. The arrangements of the paintings are complimentary and correspond to one another. They could have been one painting that was later cut and separated to create two or more scrolls. With its excellent brushwork and independent style, this painting is a work to treasure. |
