Yuan
Dynasty – (1279 – 1368A.D)
The Yuan dynasty saw great changes in the government. The Mongol
leadership did not employ the traditional Chinese scholars, these scholars
spent their time practicing various art forms like writing and painting,
especially landscapes. General they used bolder and more assertive
brushwork than the Southern Sung artists. Like Rocks and trees, downplayed
in the Ma-Hsia tradition are powerfully presented by the Yuan painters.
Mists are no longer used to suggest distance and an interest in infinity,
and spaciousness yields to a more dramatic concern with form.
The four great painters of the Yuan Dynasty are: Huang Gongwang, Ni Zan,
Wu Zhen and Wang Meng, who were all excellent painters of mountains and
water scenes. Landscape is an important branch of traditional ancient
Chinese Painting.
Chao Yuan, Ma Wan ,Chao Meng-fu and Ku An is also well known painters in
the Yuan Period.
